How to calculate discount & profit

Sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100)

Profit is the discounted sale price less cost. Margin is profit divided by the sale price. Other business expenses are excluded.

A worked example

With original selling price of 100, discount (%) of 20, cost of 50, sale price is 80 in your chosen currency. Change the example above to match your situation.

Enter amounts in the same currency and time period. Results display up to two decimal places; calculations use unrounded values. These estimates are for planning and education.

Common questions

How does a discount affect profit?

The discount reduces your selling price while the cost stays the same in this model. Compare profit per sale before and after the discount, including any costs that matter to your decision.

What happens at a 100% discount?

The sale price is zero and profit is the negative of your cost. Profit margin is undefined because the sale price, its denominator, is zero.
