How to calculate break-even
The contribution per unit pays towards fixed costs. Required units are rounded up to the next whole sale.
A worked example
With fixed costs of 5,000, price per unit of 50, variable cost per unit of 30, units to break even is 250. Change the example above to match your situation.
Enter amounts in the same currency and time period. Results display up to two decimal places; calculations use unrounded values. These estimates are for planning and education.
Common questions
Why are break-even units rounded up?
You need enough complete sales to cover fixed costs. If the calculation gives 6.2 units, seven complete sales are needed under the stated assumptions.
What if price is lower than variable cost?
Each sale fails to contribute towards fixed costs. With a price at or below variable cost there is no finite break-even sales target under this model.
